Former Walmart employee pleads guilty to swiping customer’s forgotten $100

Mar 19, 2024

CASPER, Wyo. — A 19-year-old man pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge from early September 2021 in Natrona County Circuit Court on Friday.

The defendant said he had been living in Kemmerer for most of the last two years.

Casper police were contacted by east-side Walmart security and were provided with security footage of the Sept. 4, 2021, incident, the affidavit said.

In the footage, the suspect is seen working at the self-checkout counters. When one customer forgot about the $100 in the tray after requesting cash back, the suspect immediately took it, the report said.

The suspect then folded the cash and placed it in the register podium while watching customers. After about 25 minutes he put the bills in his pocket. About 20 minutes after that he was seen buying a sandwich with $20 from his pocket.

The customer returned to the store less than two hours after leaving the cash and asked management about it. Management reviewed the video and saw what had happened.

Walmart security said the customer was reimbursed for the money.

The officer determined that the employee had “likely stolen the money with no intention of returning it to the customer.”

Theft is defined in Wyoming Statute 6-3-402(a) as follows:

“A person is guilty of theft if he knowingly takes or exercises unauthorized control over or makes an unauthorized transfer of an interest in the property of another person with the purpose of depriving the other person of the property.”

The man was sentenced to time served.
